Biography
Born in New Westminster, British Columbia, Andrea Klann was affected by the paintings of the European Masters at an early age; as a 10 year old she completed her first serious painting, a reproduction of Gainsborough's Blue Boy. Her passion for painting has sustained her throughout life. She was also influenced at a young age by a duality of cultures as her mother was of English and Scottish heritage, her father a German immigrant.
She inherited her talent from her ancestors; the Liverpool-based Tate family of more than six generations of painters. Two of the most prolific of the family were Charles Tate Sr., a painter and industrialist who settled in Toronto in 1882 and James R. Tate Sr., Toronto and Rockport, Mass., based landscape and portrait painter and philanthropist, whose work is also held in major US and Canadian institutions.
A graduate of the University of B.C., Andrea Klann furthered her art studies at Emily Carr College of Art and Design and Westminster College, London. Yet she considers herself primarily self-taught, "Painting is an inward journey, intrinsically tied to the intellect; I see it as a life-long process of growth and a deeply intuitive and personal one." Living for several years in London, Paris and Melbourne and her great passion for travel, also continues to directly influence her work.
Andrea Klann and her husband barged a 1920 bungalow to a Bowen Island property from Port Moody B.C., in 2006. "Bowen Island is unlike anywhere I have lived. It is here that I've met an incredible community of people and found inspiration among artist friends".
Klann's work is held in private collections in Canada, England and Australia. For a detailed CV please contact the artist directly.
